We Almost Didn’t Book That Cruise…

We bought a house originally built in 1912.

It has a beautiful front porch. It was recently renovated. It felt like such a gift. (and we closed around my birthday!)

And yet, if you’ve ever owned an old house, you know the truth. There is always something.

Something to fix.
Something to improve.
Something that unexpectedly breaks.

We kept thinking it wasn’t the “right” time to leave. There were projects. Expenses. Work deadlines. Life felt full.

We hadn’t taken a trip with just the two of us in a while… but it was easy to justify waiting.

Until we realized we weren’t just postponing a vacation.

We were postponing us.

5 Signs You Don’t Need a Bigger House –
You Need a Couples Cruise

Looking back, the signs were obvious.

1. Every conversation was logistics.
Schedules. Repairs. To-do lists. Rarely dreams or plans for the future.

2. We were constantly tired.
Even quiet nights at home didn’t feel restful.

3. We were always in problem-solving mode.
House challenges. Work challenges. Life.

4. We kept saying, “Once this is done…”
But something else always popped up.

5. We missed laughing together.
Not the polite kind. The easy, relaxed kind.

That’s when we knew it wasn’t about the house.

It was about connection.

Why a Cruise Was Exactly What We Needed

A couples cruise felt like the right solution.

Norwegian Viva docked outside Cozumel, Mexico

No cooking.
No cleaning.
No projects staring at us.
No constant reminders of what needed attention.

Just time.

Now, honestly, our cruise wasn’t perfect. We had cabin issues we should have addressed right away and the service wasn’t up to par with our previous experiences. (Lesson learned: always speak up early.)

But we didn’t regret going. Not once.

Because what mattered wasn’t perfection.

It was space.

Space to sit on deck and talk without distraction.
Space to linger at dinner.
Space to remember we’re more than managers of a house and calendar.

That reset was worth it.

Travel Isn’t an Escape; It’s a Reset

We hear couples say all the time:

“Once work slows down…”
“After this renovation…”
“Next year will be better…”

But here’s what we’ve learned, both personally and professionally.

There will always be something.

A couples cruise (or any intentional trip for two) isn’t about running away from responsibilities.

It’s about strengthening the relationship that carries those responsibilities.

And that matters.

You need time together.
